Russia Assures India Fertilizer Supply Amid Subsidy Crisis

By Business DeskRussia Assures India Fertilizer Supply Amid Subsidy Crisis

Russia confirms continued fertilizer and energy supplies to India, a critical move as India’s subsidy bill escalates due to global supply disruptions and rising costs.

Russia has assured India of uninterrupted fertilizer supplies, a vital development as India grapples with escalating fertilizer subsidy expenditures and significant global supply chain challenges.

India’s Mounting Subsidy Burden

The Indian government anticipates spending over Rs 1 lakh crore on fertilizer subsidies in the current fiscal year, FY27. This projection comes as more than 55% of the allocated Rs 1.77 lakh crore has already been utilized.

  • Projected fertilizer subsidy spend for FY27: over Rs 1 lakh crore
  • Total FY27 allocation for fertilizer subsidies: Rs 1.77 lakh crore
  • Percentage of allocation already utilized: more than 55%
  • India’s reliance on imports for fertilizer and raw materials: 70%

Global events, including the West Asia crisis and disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, have intensified the situation. These factors have complicated the worldwide availability of fertilizers and crucial inputs like LNG.

Russian Assurance on Critical Supplies

During External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s recent visit to Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed Russia’s commitment. He assured India of maintaining both fertilizer and energy supplies, indicating a potential increase in fertilizer provisions.

While global urea prices have seen a notable decline, other essential fertilizer types have experienced price increases. Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) and Muriate of Potash (MoP) are among those with rising costs.

Bolstering Supply Security

India’s substantial reliance on imports, accounting for 70% of its fertilizer and raw material needs, makes these supply assurances critical. The country has proactively diversified its procurement from various nations.

Russia’s renewed commitment is expected to significantly bolster India’s supply security. However, the ultimate impact on India’s subsidy burden will depend heavily on international prices and future import agreements.
