By Business Desk
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh virtually inaugurated ₹3,500 crore infrastructure expansion projects in West Bengal, boosting industrial capacity for GRSE and Yantra India Ltd.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh virtually laid the foundation stone for five significant brownfield expansion projects in West Bengal on Sunday.
These initiatives, valued at nearly ₹3,500 crore, are set to bolster the region’s industrial landscape and include facilities for Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) and Yantra India Ltd.
Boosting Regional Industrial Capacity
The expansion comprises three new facilities specifically for GRSE and two for Yantra India. Rajnath Singh, accompanied by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari during the Kolkata ceremony, highlighted these projects as a new phase of development.
He noted that these launches replace previous reports of factory closures, signaling renewed industrial growth for the state.
GRSE’s Strategic Expansion Details
To facilitate its increased operational capacity, GRSE has secured crucial lease agreements with the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK).
These agreements cover two small shipyards situated along the banks of the Hooghly River. Additionally, GRSE has acquired a substantial 32-acre riverside property located at Raichak.
Economic Impact and Future Outlook
These expansions are designed to significantly enhance GRSE’s capabilities, particularly in warship construction and refit operations. The strategic move aims to strengthen the company’s overall operational framework.
Beyond the direct impact on GRSE, these projects are expected to stimulate West Bengal’s broader industrial growth. This will occur through the creation of new employment opportunities and increased engagement for supporting industries, especially Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
