PhysicsWallah Shifts to Profitability: Offline Growth Slows
By ThePip Desk
Edtech giant PhysicsWallah pivots strategy towards profitability, slowing offline expansion to focus on K-12 online growth and hybrid models.
PhysicsWallah is strategically re-calibrating its growth trajectory, shifting focus from aggressive offline expansion to prioritizing profitability. This pivot sees the edtech firm extending its previous two-year expansion plan to four years, as confirmed by co-founder Prateek Maheshwari.
Q1 FY27 Performance Snapshot
PhysicsWallah’s latest financial results highlight a clear shift in its operational focus:
- Revenue from Operations: Rs 1,054 crore, marking a 24% increase.
- Net Loss: Narrowed to Rs 88 crore from Rs 127 crore.
- Enrolment Growth: A modest 2.4%, reaching 2.49 million students.
- Offline Margins: Improved by 475 basis points to -22% in the last quarter.
The company’s strategic deceleration in offline expansion aims to enhance existing centers, refine processes, and boost student outcomes. This move is explicitly designed to make the entire offline business nearly profitable within the current year.
PhysicsWallah has also paused its K-12 offline expansion for the current financial year, opting instead to build its online K-12 presence first. This mirrors its successful test preparation model, with K-12 revenue already surpassing Rs 100 crore, representing an 88% growth. Co-founder Maheshwari cited a more frugal approach to capital allocation, especially given the substantial capital expenditure required for independent K-12 schools.
A new hybrid learning model, combining online and offline strengths, is set for pilot implementation in select cities for JEE and NEET programs. This model leverages online platforms for strong teachers and high Net Promoter Scores while integrating offline elements for discipline and peer engagement. Affordability remains a core principle, with increased Average Revenue Per User stemming from premium offerings like ‘Infinity’ and ‘Infinity Pro’.
Despite a temporary 2.4% enrolment dip attributed to external factors like the NEET examination’s re-conduct, PhysicsWallah anticipates stronger enrolment trends in Q2 and Q3. The company maintains its annual revenue growth guidance at 30%. Additionally, an AI tutor, which demonstrated 95% lesson-level accuracy in pilot tests, is slated for release this year.
PhysicsWallah’s recalibrated strategy signals a mature shift towards sustainable growth and operational efficiency, moving beyond rapid expansion to consolidate its market position through targeted innovation and financial discipline.
