Manipal Health Enterprises saw its shares climb by as much as 10.7% on Wednesday, hitting 653.10 rupees on the National Stock Exchange of India. This strong market debut valued the multispecialty hospital network at approximately $9.03 billion.
The initial public offering, which raised $960 million, marked India’s second-largest IPO this year, following SBI Funds Management’s listing in July. The issue price for the shares was 590 rupees. Backed by Temasek, Manipal Health is positioned to benefit from increasing demand for specialized healthcare services in India.
Expansion and Sector Growth
Manipal Health currently manages over 13,000 beds across 49 hospitals. The company intends to invest 40 billion rupees to expand its bed capacity by over 18%, aiming to add 2,400 beds within the next three to four years.
The Indian healthcare sector is experiencing a boom, attracting significant private and foreign investments from major players such as Blackstone, Novo Nordisk, and KKR. Manipal Health’s expansion plans aim to capitalize on this sector growth.
Analyst Perspective and Valuation
Shivani Nyati, head of wealth at Swastika Investmart, commented that while the strong listing demonstrates healthy investor interest, the company’s premium valuation might limit its immediate upside. She advised existing allottees to hold their shares, while recommending potential new investors wait for more favorable entry points or evidence of further debt reduction.
Brokerage firm Angel One noted Manipal Health is valued at 84.65 times its fiscal 2026 earnings, based on its IPO price band of 560 rupees to 590 rupees. This valuation stands higher compared to its listed competitors.
Rival Market Capitalizations
Competitors like Apollo Hospitals, Fortis Healthcare, and Max Healthcare are valued between 66.15x and 74.55x their earnings. Apollo Hospitals, Manipal Health’s closest rival, holds a market capitalization of around 1.3 trillion rupees and plans to increase its nearly 10,000-bed capacity to 13,000 beds by fiscal year 2030.
Max Healthcare and Fortis Healthcare have market capitalizations of 1.04 trillion rupees and 704.22 billion rupees, respectively. Manipal Health’s robust market debut and ambitious expansion plans underscore increasing investor confidence in India’s specialized healthcare sector, despite a premium valuation.
