By Business DeskLadakh’s Thoise Airport to Launch Commercial Flights by 2026

Ladakh is set to boost air connectivity with Thoise Airport commencing commercial flights by December 2026, enhancing regional access and tourism.

The Union Territory administration of Ladakh is actively working to enhance its air connectivity, aiming to initiate civil flight operations from Thoise Airport in Nubra Valley by December 2026. This move forms part of a broader strategy to expand civilian air services, with Kargil Airport also under consideration for future operations.

Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena recently convened a meeting in New Delhi with key officials from the Ministry of Defence, Indian Air Force, Ministry of Civil Aviation, and the UT administration. The discussions focused on reviewing the preparations required to significantly boost regional connectivity and tourism across Ladakh’s remote border areas.

Thoise Airport: Path to Commercial Flights

Thoise Airport is currently in a more advanced stage of development for civil aviation. The Indian Air Force has granted approval for five acres of land, which will be used for constructing a new civil terminal in Nubra.

Runway recarpeting at Thoise is projected to conclude by November 2026. Initially, the administration plans to refurbish and utilize the airport’s existing chartered-flight terminal to commence civil operations by December 2026.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has received a request to specify the necessary infrastructure requirements for commercial flights from this existing terminal. The Public Works Department of the UT administration will undertake the refurbishment work.

Kargil Airport: Assessment Underway

For Kargil Airport, a critical joint inspection is scheduled for September 1, involving the Lieutenant Governor, Indian Air Force, Ministry of Civil Aviation, and AAI. This assessment aims to evaluate the airport’s current infrastructure, technical needs, and other aspects to determine its readiness for civilian operations.

Unlike Thoise, no specific target date has been announced for the commencement of commercial flights from Kargil. However, improving civilian air connectivity to this region remains a long-standing priority, especially considering its challenging winter conditions.

Boosting Tourism and Regional Accessibility

The introduction of commercial services at Thoise is expected to significantly enhance accessibility for both Nubra residents and tourists. Destinations such as Turtuk and Siachen Base Camp will become more reachable.

Lieutenant Governor Saxena underscored that flight operations from both Thoise and Kargil could unlock substantial tourism potential in border areas. This includes places like Turtuk, Siachen Base Camp, Kargil, and Drass.

These proposed air services are anticipated to stimulate tourism, provide support for local economic activities, and generally improve overall regional connectivity. The LG has urged all involved agencies to collaborate effectively and adhere to established timelines to finalize all necessary infrastructure, regulatory, and operational formalities.

It is important to understand that December 2026 for Thoise represents a target, not a confirmed launch date, and Kargil is still firmly within the assessment phase.
