India Launches Indigenous Optical Network Testbed

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) have finalized a five-year agreement to establish an indigenous end-to-end optical network testbed. This pivotal facility will be located at C-DOT’s campus in New Delhi.

Strategic Purpose for Domestic Innovation

This initiative provides a critical platform for Indian startups, telecom companies, researchers, and industry players. Its primary goal is to facilitate the development, testing, and validation of advanced optical communication products and technologies prior to their commercial launch. This aligns directly with the Indian government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision, bolstering domestic telecom capabilities.

The testbed is designed to bridge the crucial gap between laboratory innovation and market readiness. Companies can assess product performance, interoperability, and real-world deployment scenarios within this integrated environment.

Integrated Technologies & National Resource

The facility will serve as a shared national resource, integrating C-DOT’s optical core, optical access, and Quantum Security technologies. It will also incorporate advanced third-party testing and measurement equipment from trusted vendors.

Phased Implementation & Skill Development

The project’s implementation spans its five-year duration, unfolding in two distinct phases. This structured approach ensures a systematic build-out and sustained operational support.

The initial two years will focus on establishing the physical and technical infrastructure, including essential optical network components and specialized testing equipment. The subsequent three years are dedicated to operational aspects, ongoing maintenance, and continuous technical support for ecosystem users, complemented by educational outreach programs.

Crucially, the testbed will also offer hands-on training and exposure to next-generation optical networking technologies. This directly fosters skill development among students, researchers, and telecom professionals across the country.
