India’s unemployment rate fell to 5.1% in July 2026, down from 5.5% in June, according to NSO data. Rural UR decreased, while urban UR remained stable.

India’s overall unemployment rate (UR) for individuals aged 15 years and above saw a decline to 5.1% in July 2026, according to a government survey by the National Statistics Office (NSO).

This figure represents a notable decrease from 5.5% recorded in June 2026, signaling an improving trend in the nation’s employment landscape.

Understanding Unemployment Trends

The rural unemployment rate also experienced a reduction, falling to 4.5% in July from 5% in the preceding month.

Conversely, the urban unemployment rate remained largely stable at 6.7% in July 2026, showing only a slight increase from 6.6% in June 2026.

Comparing July 2026 data to July 2025 reveals that the overall and rural URs were broadly stable year-on-year.

However, the urban UR demonstrated a decrease of 0.5 percentage points from 7.2% when observed against July 2025 figures.

Gender-Specific Unemployment Shifts

For males aged 15 and above, the overall UR declined from 5.3% in June 2026 to 5.0% in July 2026.

This July 2026 male overall UR is also lower than the 5.3% observed in July 2025, indicating a positive trajectory.

The rural male UR decreased from 4.9% to 4.6% month-on-month, matching the level seen in July 2025.

Urban male UR held stable compared to June 2026 but registered a 0.7 percentage point decrease year-on-year, settling at 5.9%.

For females aged 15 and above, both the overall and rural URs decreased in July 2026 compared to June 2026.

However, these female unemployment rates remained above the levels recorded in July 2025, suggesting a more nuanced recovery for this demographic.

The urban female UR increased by 0.4 percentage points to 8.8% in July 2026 from 8.4% in June 2026, while remaining broadly stable compared to July 2025.

Labour Force Participation Rate Rises

The overall Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) for individuals aged 15 and above increased to 55.4% in July 2026 from 54.4% in June 2026.

This upward movement reverses a trend of decline and stability observed earlier in the year, indicating more people are entering or re-entering the workforce.

The increase in LFPR was also evident in rural areas, where it rose to 58.0% from 56.6%, and marginally in urban areas, moving from 50.1% to 50.4%.

Year-on-year, the overall LFPR increased by 0.5 percentage points, primarily driven by a 1.1 percentage point rise in rural LFPR, while urban LFPR saw a marginal decline.

Female LFPR showed a significant increase from 32.7% in June 2026 to 34.4% in July 2026, with similar increases observed in both rural and urban female LFPRs.

Worker Population Ratio Shows Improvement

The Worker Population Ratio (WPR) for the age group 15 years and above also demonstrated an improving trend across sectors in July 2026, reaching 52.5% from 51.4% in June 2026.

Rural WPR increased by 1.6 percentage points to 55.4%, and urban WPR marginally increased to 47.0%, reflecting broader employment gains.

Notably, rural female WPR increased sharply by 2.5 percentage points to 37.2%, highlighting specific improvements in rural female employment.

Compared to July 2025, the overall WPR in July 2026 was higher by 0.5 percentage points, mainly attributed to an increase in rural WPR.
