India’s Premium Shift: How Consumer Choices Impact Your Wallet
By Business Desk
Discover how rising incomes and aspirations are driving Indian consumers towards premium products and experiences, reshaping shopping habits and impacting your personal finance.
If your shopping cart feels a bit more “fancy” lately, you’re not alone. India is seeing a major shift in how we spend, moving from just buying more stuff to choosing higher-quality, premium options across everything from groceries to housing.
Your Daily Essentials, Elevated
This premium trend is especially clear in Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG). While mass-market urban consumption has slowed, premium brands are booming, changing what we pick up off the shelves.
Premium FMCG brands are growing at nearly double the rate of their mass-market counterparts.
These premium items now make up 27% of total FMCG sales by value.
They contribute a significant 42% to the sector’s overall value growth.
Dressing Up Your Wardrobe
Our closets are also seeing an upgrade. Shoppers are gravitating towards higher-priced clothing, indicating a clear shift in brand loyalty and spending habits.
Premium apparel is expected to grow at over a 45% Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR).
The mid-premium segment, priced between Rs 3,500 and Rs 7,000, is expanding at approximately 25%.
By 2030, branded apparel is projected to account for more than half of all spending in the sector.
Dream Homes Get a Luxury Upgrade
Even where we live is reflecting this premiumization. Homebuyers are now looking for more than just a place; they want an experience, pushing luxury housing demand.
Homes priced above Rs 1 crore made up 54% of sales in India’s eight major cities during the first half of 2026.
This figure climbed to 71% in the top seven cities for the first quarter of 2026.
The ultra-luxury segment, with homes over Rs 10 crore, saw sales exceeding 800 units in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Chennai in FY26, totaling over Rs 11,000 crore.
Smarter Money Choices
Our financial lives are also getting a premium touch. As household wealth grows, more people are opting for sophisticated financial products and services.
India’s mutual fund assets under management have grown nearly sixfold in the last decade.
They have tripled in the past five years, now representing about 11% of household financial assets.
Wealth management assets are projected to almost double from $1.1 trillion in FY24 to $2.3 trillion by FY29.
Beyond the Basics: Tech and Travel
It’s not just physical goods; our spending on experiences and advanced tech is also going premium. We’re choosing quality and unique experiences.
Premium smartphones and hearables are seeing substantial growth, even as overall unit volumes remain flat.
Spending on gaming, fantasy sports, subscriptions, and overseas travel is also on the rise, showing a clear preference for value-added leisure.
This widespread shift towards premium choices across various sectors highlights how rising incomes and aspirations are fundamentally reshaping India’s consumer landscape.
