India Pushes PNG Adoption: Nodal Officers Appointed
By ThePip Desk
India’s Petroleum Ministry directs states to appoint nodal officers, accelerating household transition from LPG to Piped Natural Gas (PNG) for energy security.
The Central government has urged states and Union Territories to appoint district-level nodal officers, a crucial step to accelerate the adoption of piped natural gas (PNG) in households. This directive from the Petroleum Ministry aims to streamline the transition from liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to PNG, supporting India’s broader energy transition goals.
This initiative seeks to enhance consumer convenience and significantly reduce the logistical burdens associated with LPG distribution. The move gains particular relevance following disruptions experienced in LPG supply chains during the recent West Asia crisis, which underscored PNG’s inherent resilience as an energy source.
Streamlining the Transition Process
A new regulatory framework is being implemented to prevent households from maintaining both LPG and PNG connections in areas where piped gas infrastructure is already available. This framework includes provisions to discontinue LPG supply if a PNG connection application is not submitted after due notice has been provided to eligible consumers.
To facilitate this transition, PNG Coordination Committees (PCCs) are being established at the local level. These committees will be responsible for identifying eligible households, issuing the necessary notices, and conducting comprehensive consumer outreach programs to inform and assist residents.
District Administration’s Pivotal Role
District administrations are expected to provide critical support for this nationwide shift. Their responsibilities include securing the necessary right-of-way for pipeline infrastructure, actively facilitating the transition process for households, and supporting consumer awareness campaigns.
Furthermore, district authorities will play a key role in resolving any grievances that arise during the adoption process. Officials from the Food and Civil Supplies Department are considered ideal for these nodal officer positions, leveraging their existing interface and experience with LPG distributors.
