India’s non-fossil fuel energy capacity surged 275% to 300.5 GW in 12 years, driven by massive solar and wind expansion. Over 17 GW added in FY 2026-27.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi announced India’s non-fossil-fuel energy capacity has significantly expanded over the past 12 years, reaching 300.5 GW. This substantial growth represents a 275% increase from its initial 80.3 GW.
Decadal Expansion in Renewable Capacity
• Overall non-fossil-fuel capacity increased from 80.3 GW to 300.5 GW.
• This marks a 275% surge in the past 12 years.
• Solar capacity saw a nearly 58-fold increase, from 2.8 GW to 165 GW.
• Wind capacity rose by 176%, growing from 21 GW to 58 GW.
India continued this momentum, adding over 17 GW of renewable energy capacity within the first four months of FY 2026-27. This recent expansion primarily comprises new solar and wind installations.
Recent Additions and Household Initiatives
• Total renewable energy added in the first four months of FY 2026-27: over 17 GW.
• Solar capacity contributed 14.33 GW to this recent addition.
• Wind capacity added over 2 GW during the same period.
The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has also made considerable progress, successfully reaching approximately 53.5 lakh beneficiary households. This initiative aims to provide free electricity to residential consumers through rooftop solar.
The sustained growth across solar, wind, and household schemes underscores India’s strategic push towards a robust non-fossil-fuel energy infrastructure. This trajectory reflects a clear commitment to expanding clean energy resources.
