India’s Indigenous AK-203 ‘Sher’ Rifle Ready for Army Trials
By Business Desk
India’s first fully indigenous AK-203 ‘Sher’ rifle, manufactured in Amethi, is set for formal Indian Army trials in September, marking a milestone in defense self-reliance.
India has achieved a crucial milestone in defense self-reliance with the successful production and testing of its first fully indigenous AK-203 ‘Sher’ assault rifle. Manufactured by Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL) at its Korwa facility in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, this advanced prototype is now slated for formal Indian Army trials in September.
Major General S K Sharma, CEO and MD of IRRPL, confirmed that every component and input material for the ‘Sher’ has been sourced from Indian industry. This signifies a complete indigenization, moving beyond mere localization, and marks a proud moment for domestic manufacturing capabilities.
The ‘Sher’ Rifle: Specifications & Purpose
The AK-203 ‘Sher’ is poised to replace the Indian Army’s long-serving INSAS 5.56 mm rifle, standard since the late 1990s. Its design incorporates modern features like an adjustable folding stock and provisions for optics and other accessories, blending a proven operating architecture with contemporary elements.
- The rifle weighs approximately 3.6 kg.
- It boasts an effective range of up to 800 meters.
- The battle sight range stands at 350 meters.
- It features a 415-mm barrel.
- The cyclic rate is around 700 rounds per minute.
- It fires the 7.62×39 mm intermediate cartridge.
This heavier ammunition choice optimizes performance for short and medium combat ranges, delivering substantial terminal effect in close-quarter and counter-insurgency scenarios. While it may increase a soldier’s load and has a less flat ballistic trajectory than 5.56-mm rifles, it avoids the significant weight and recoil of 7.62×51 mm battle rifles.
Strategic Imperatives and Production Trajectory
IRRPL’s achievement underscores India’s capacity to domestically manufacture and maintain the weapon without foreign dependence, establishing a robust local supply chain. This is a critical step in the nation’s broader defense strategy.
- IRRPL holds a contract to supply 601,427 AK-203 rifles to the Indian armed forces.
- The initial delivery target is by the end of 2032.
- The company aims to complete delivery by the end of 2030, a year ahead of schedule.
- Production is planned to increase to 150,000 rifles annually.
- Efforts are underway to achieve a production rate of one AK-203 (Sher) every 100 seconds.
The accelerated production goals, driven by capacity enhancement and indigenization efforts, highlight India’s commitment to bolstering its defense capabilities through domestic innovation and manufacturing independence.
