India’s ₹1T Digital Leap: Satellite Comms Connect Rural India
By Business Desk
India’s ₹1 trillion digital opportunity: Satellite communications poised to bridge the rural divide, connecting over 50 crore citizens lacking broadband access.
India stands on the brink of a significant digital connectivity expansion, with an opportunity valued at over ₹1 trillion, largely driven by satellite communication (satcom) services. This potential addresses a critical gap where over 50 crore rural Indians currently lack broadband access, a challenge terrestrial networks have yet to overcome.
Understanding the Connectivity Gap
According to TV Ramachandran, President of the Broadband India Forum (BIF), satcom offers a viable pathway to connect these underserved populations. The lack of terrestrial network reach in vast rural areas makes satellite technology an essential solution.
- India’s digital connectivity opportunity: ₹1 trillion
- Rural Indians without broadband access: Over 50 crore
- Population reliant on agriculture: 60-70%
Moreover, satcom connectivity promises to modernize India’s agriculture sector, which supports 60-70% of the population. Implementing satcom-connected IoT devices could significantly improve agricultural yields, currently among the lowest globally.
Integrated Telecom and Satellite’s Role
The benefits extend beyond agriculture, supporting private enterprises that establish factories in rural regions by leveraging affordable labor. Manish Sinha, Department of Telecom Member (Finance), emphasized that the future of telecom infrastructure in India will be an integrated system.
This comprehensive system will seamlessly combine fiber, mobile, Wi-Fi, and satellite connectivity. Satellites are identified as crucial for strengthening digital infrastructure across multiple vital sectors.

Advancing Satellite-Based Connectivity
The Department of Telecom (DoT) is actively collaborating with the Department of Space and other stakeholders to advance satellite-based digital connectivity. Their efforts focus on creating technology-neutral regulations to accommodate new technologies such as GEO, NEO, and high-throughput satellite systems.
The Indian government has already authorized key players to provide satcom services, pending necessary security clearances. This strategic move aims to deliver affordable, reliable, and resilient connectivity across all geographies, particularly in hard-to-reach communities.
