Income Tax Dept Probes Illicit Fund Transfers Nationwide
By Business Desk
India’s Income Tax Department launches a nationwide probe into 394 entities and 36 professionals suspected of illicitly transferring funds abroad over three years.
The Income Tax Department has initiated a nationwide verification drive, scrutinizing 394 entities and 36 professionals. This extensive operation targets individuals and businesses suspected of illicitly transferring substantial funds outside India over the past three years.
Investigation Focus: Numbers and Locations
The probe specifically includes 394 distinct entities and 36 professionals. A significant portion, numbering 117 of these entities, are located in India’s sensitive land-border states, adding another layer to the investigation.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) noted that many of the identified entities reported minimal turnovers. Furthermore, they often failed to file mandatory tax returns, raising immediate red flags for authorities.
Discrepancies in Financial Activity
Investigators observed no clear correlation between these entities’ stated business activities and the large sums of money they were sending abroad. Remittances for purposes like freight, software imports, or consulting services did not align with the scale of the transactions being conducted.
Ground-level intelligence further revealed that these entities were not operating from their officially registered addresses. This discrepancy indicates a potential pattern of shell operations designed to facilitate undeclared financial movements.
Department’s Ongoing Focus
The Income Tax Department is actively working to identify the key individuals and “masterminds” behind these suspicious financial transfers. This concerted effort aims to bring transparency to cross-border remittances and curb illegal fund outflows.
