Houthi rebels strike Saudi Aramco’s Jazan refinery with a drone, escalating regional tensions and threatening the Yemen truce. Fire contained, no casualties reported.

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels executed a drone attack on a Saudi Aramco oil refinery located in Jazan, southwestern Saudi Arabia, on Sunday. This incident marks a significant escalation in a series of strikes targeting the kingdom amidst heightened tensions across the Middle East.

Attack Details Emerge

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree claimed responsibility, asserting the strike was in retaliation for alleged Saudi drone incursions into Yemeni airspace over Hajjah and Saada provinces. Saudi Arabia’s Energy Ministry later confirmed a fire at an Aramco facility in Jazan, which was successfully brought under control with no reported casualties.

The escalation extended beyond Saudi Arabia, as a Yemeni government official reported that the Houthis also targeted the strategically vital Mocha port on Yemen’s Red Sea coast. This port, under the control of Yemen’s internationally recognized government, has undergone recent renovations to serve as an alternative to Houthi-controlled ports in Hodeida.

Regional Stability Under Threat

These recent strikes significantly fuel concerns that the 2022 truce in Yemen, which had largely ended major fighting, could now be jeopardized. The renewed assaults on Saudi soil and critical Red Sea shipping infrastructure risk reigniting Yemen’s civil war, introducing further instability to an already volatile region.

Broader Geopolitical Implications

Concurrently, Iran has put forth new demands concerning the potential resumption of negotiations and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The Pentagon is also reportedly pressing the US defense industry to accelerate weapons production in response to these rising regional tensions.
