GSTAT Filings Surge: 75,000+ Cases, But Only 83 Disposed
By Business Desk
Over 75,000 cases filed with GSTAT since Sep 2025, yet only 83 resolved. Concerns rise over low disposal rates and underutilization of the tribunal.
The Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) has seen more than 75,000 case filings since its e-filing portal launched on September 24, 2025. Despite this volume, the tribunal has disposed of only 83 cases to date, indicating a significant gap between submissions and resolutions.
The Principal Bench, located in New Delhi, has processed 7,306 cases individually. From these, a mere 7 cases have been successfully disposed of, highlighting the slow pace of case resolution across the tribunal.
Addressing the Filing Gap
The GSTAT President expressed concern over the lower-than-anticipated number of filings. The tribunal had initially expected to receive between 2 lakh and 2.5 lakh cases, a figure considerably higher than current submissions.
To encourage greater utilization, GSTAT is actively promoting its filing mechanisms. This includes a token facility designed to assist appellants whose cases are nearing their filing deadlines, ensuring accessibility despite technical issues that previously extended appeal deadlines.
Clarifying GST Disputes and Appellate Role
Recent rulings from GSTAT are beginning to provide clarity on Goods and Services Tax (GST) disputes. These decisions are particularly impactful for cases involving fraud, where the need for clear evidentiary proof is being emphasized.
GSTAT functions as the second appellate authority within the tax dispute resolution framework. It handles cases that have already passed through the first appellate authority, which has processed approximately 3.5 lakh cases prior to reaching the tribunal.
The tribunal’s ongoing efforts aim to streamline the appeal process and address the backlog, ensuring that a greater proportion of the filed cases move towards resolution efficiently.
