India’s Government e-Marketplace (GeM) marks a decade, surpassing ₹20 lakh crore in GMV with over 3.78 crore orders, revolutionizing public procurement.

India’s national public procurement platform, the Government e-Marketplace (GeM), has marked its tenth anniversary, achieving a cumulative Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) exceeding Rs 20 lakh crore from over 3.78 crore orders.

Key Milestones and Growth

  • Launched on August 9, 2016, under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
  • Cumulative GMV: Over Rs 20 lakh crore.
  • Total orders: More than 3.78 crore.
  • Annual GMV in FY 2016-17: Rs 422 crore.
  • Annual GMV in FY 2024-25 and FY 2025-26: Over Rs 5 lakh crore each.
  • Second Rs 10 lakh crore in cumulative GMV achieved in under two years.

This rapid expansion highlights GeM’s accelerated trust and adoption, serving its core mission to enhance technology, transparency, and efficiency within public procurement processes across India.

Mihir Kumar, CEO of GeM, stated the platform has fundamentally shifted procurement from opaque, fragmented systems to a transparent marketplace. He also noted future plans for integrating AI to improve public value and ensure equal opportunities for all.

Impact and Participation

  • Registered sellers: Increased to 25.45 lakh.
  • Buyer organizations: Grown to 1.37 lakh.
  • Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) contribution: Over Rs 9.07 lakh crore in orders, representing 45.6% of the cumulative GMV.

An IIT Delhi study estimated significant financial benefits, projecting a monetized gain of Rs 86,571.69 crore from price and process efficiencies between FY 2023-24 and FY 2025-26. This underscores the platform’s economic impact.

Efficiency and Savings

  • GeM items were cheaper than those on Amazon and Flipkart 74.3% of the time.
  • This resulted in a 13.6% spend-weighted saving for buyers.
  • Transaction charges: 97% of all orders are now free of transaction fees.

The platform currently digitizes the entire procurement lifecycle and employs AI/ML tools to identify potential cartelization and collusion. An interim survey also indicated high satisfaction levels among both buyers and sellers regarding transparency, inclusivity, and efficiency.

Looking ahead, GeM plans to intensify its focus on data-driven intelligence. This strategy aims to further ensure fair competition and achieve optimal value for public funds, building on its decade of operational success.
