Gas Stocks Surge on India’s PNG Connection Incentive
By ThePip Desk
India’s government approves an incentive scheme to boost domestic piped natural gas connections from Sept 2026, driving gains in CGD stocks like Mahanagar Gas, Indraprastha Gas, and Adani Total Gas.
City gas distribution (CGD) stocks registered gains following the Government of India’s approval of an incentive scheme. This initiative aims to accelerate the adoption of domestic piped natural gas (PNG) connections nationwide, set to commence on September 1, 2026.
Key Market Movers
- Mahanagar Gas closed at Rs. 1134.30, marking a 2.13% increase or 23.65 points from its prior close of Rs. 1110.65.
- Indraprastha Gas traded at Rs. 154.30, up by 3.25% or 4.85 points from its previous close of Rs. 149.45.
- Adani Total Gas recorded a price of Rs. 667.65, rising by 3.08% or 19.95 points against its last closing figure of Rs. 647.70.
Under the newly approved scheme, eligible CGD entities will receive an additional 200 Standard Cubic Metres (SCM) of domestically produced, lower-priced APM gas. This allocation is for every new billed domestic PNG connection exceeding a set threshold for their respective Geographical Area.
Scheme Implementation and Benefits
- The incentive program will be rolled out in two distinct tranches over a six-month period.
- Additional gas supplies will enable CGD companies to substitute more expensive Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) currently used in their Compressed Natural Gas (Transport) segment.
- This shift is projected to reduce overall gas-sourcing costs significantly for these entities.
- The cost savings are expected to shorten the capital expenditure payback period for domestic PNG connections from approximately 10 years to around 3 years.
Such a substantial reduction in payback time provides a robust financial incentive for CGD companies to expand household PNG connections more rapidly. This structural change is poised to reshape the economics of domestic gas distribution.
