Mutual fund houses reported holding Rs 3,811 crore in unclaimed money by the end of fiscal year 2025-26, according to recent data from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).

This substantial sum includes both unpaid dividends and redemption proceeds that investors were entitled to receive but have not claimed.

The Escalating Problem of Unclaimed Funds

The total unclaimed amount has shown a significant upward trajectory over the past three financial years, underscoring a persistent challenge for investors and regulators.

  • In FY 2022-23, the unclaimed amount stood at Rs 1,506 crore.
  • It rose to Rs 2,861.9 crore in FY 2023-24, marking a nearly 90% increase.
  • By FY 2024-25, the figure reached Rs 3,452 crore, an additional 20.6% rise.
  • The latest data for FY 2025-26 shows a total of Rs 3,811 crore, representing a 10.4% increase from the previous year.

Overall, the unclaimed money has surged by approximately 153%, or Rs 2,305 crore, since FY 2022-23.

Dividend and Redemption Proceeds Breakdown

Unclaimed dividends constitute the majority of these funds, while redemption proceeds also contribute significantly to the total.

  • Unclaimed dividends accounted for about 71% of the total, reaching Rs 2,689 crore in FY26.
  • This represents a nearly 171% increase from Rs 992.8 crore in FY 2022-23.
  • Unclaimed redemption proceeds also increased by about 119%, rising from Rs 513.2 crore to Rs 1,122 crore over the same period.

Why Funds Remain Unclaimed

Several common issues lead to investors not claiming their rightful mutual fund earnings.

  • Outdated or incorrect bank account details for direct credit.
  • Failure to update address records, leading to lost physical communication.
  • Dividend cheques remaining unencashed for extended periods.
  • Incomplete or outdated Know Your Customer (KYC) details.

How to Recover Your Unclaimed Investments

Investors who suspect they have forgotten an old mutual fund investment have several avenues to trace and recover their money.

  • Contact the respective Asset Management Company (AMC) or Registrar and Transfer Agent (RTA) directly.
  • Review your Consolidated Account Statement to track holdings and any unclaimed amounts.
  • Utilize the MF Central platform for a consolidated view of mutual fund holdings.
  • For unknown AMCs or lost investment records, SEBI’s MITRA platform can help identify inactive or forgotten folios.

After identifying the relevant AMC or RTA through these methods, investors can approach them for verification and to initiate the claim process for their funds.

The Importance of Investor Vigilance

The rising volume of unclaimed mutual fund money highlights the critical need for investors to maintain accurate and current personal information.

Regularly reviewing mutual fund holdings and ensuring dividend and redemption payments are directed to an active bank account are essential practices to prevent funds from becoming unclaimed.
