Small SIPs Drop 1.4M Accounts Amid Volatility & Gold Surge
By Market Desk
India’s small-ticket SIPs (under Rs 1,000) fell by 1.4 million accounts in FY26 due to market volatility, despite record overall inflows. Gold & silver saw strong returns.
India’s small-ticket Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs), monthly contributions of Rs 1,000 or less, saw a significant contraction of 1.4 million accounts in FY26. This decline occurred despite the mutual fund industry recording robust overall SIP inflows, reaching a record Rs 32,087 crore in March 2026.
The SIP stoppage ratio also crossed 100 percent in both March and April 2026, indicating more accounts were discontinued than newly registered.
Key Market Figures
- Overall SIP inflows (March 2026): Rs 32,087 crore
- Monthly inflows: Consistently above Rs 30,000 crore for six consecutive months
- Small-ticket SIP decline (FY26): Approximately 1.4 million accounts
- SIP stoppage ratio (March & April 2026): Crossed 100 percent
Prolonged market volatility since September 2024 significantly tested small-ticket investors. A flat-to-negative mark-to-market experience made it difficult for those who entered during the 2021-2024 bull run to absorb negligible or negative returns. These investors often lack larger financial buffers to withstand extended periods of subdued performance.
The exceptional outperformance of gold and silver created a compelling alternative for investors. While equity SIPs delivered flat or negative returns, precious metals showcased substantial gains. This visible contrast psychologically shifted small-ticket investors away from the slower accumulation of equity SIPs.
Precious Metals Outperform Equities
- Gold surge (2025): 75-80 percent
- Silver surge (2025): Approximately 138 percent
- Equity SIPs (same period): Flat or negative returns
A third factor contributing to the decline is a behavioral shift towards discretionary investing. Digital platforms have facilitated easy pausing of SIPs, allowing investors to deploy lump-sum amounts when they perceive market dips. This reintroduces market-timing decisions, often causing investors to miss crucial recoveries after stopping during corrections.
Navigating Future Growth
This data does not signify a failure of SIPs as a wealth-creation tool, but rather highlights headwinds for SIPs as an onboarding mechanism for new investors. The challenge remains in educating new small-ticket investors about market realities and appropriate long-term strategies.
Investor Guidance for SIP Holders
- Verify goal alignment with investment horizon.
- Consider implementing step-up SIPs to increase annual contributions.
- Ensure fund category matches long-term investment goals.
The contraction in small-ticket SIPs is largely viewed as a cyclical event. Overall SIP inflows did rebound in June 2026, suggesting a potential recovery. However, sustained education on market cycles and disciplined investing remains critical for this segment.
