Indian Markets Dip: Sensex Falls Amid Inflation Fears

By ThePip DeskIndian Markets Dip: Sensex Falls Amid Inflation Fears

Indian equity markets face bearish pressure as the BSE Sensex drops 0.42% due to inflation concerns, rising oil prices, and global bond yields.

Indian equity markets faced continued bearish pressure today, with the BSE Sensex trading at 76908.72, marking a decline of 326.74 points or 0.42% in early afternoon deals.

Key Market Figures

  • BSE Sensex current level: 76908.72
  • Daily decline: 326.74 points (0.42%)
  • Intraday trading range: 76823.91 to 77347.81
  • Index composition: 8 stocks advancing, 22 stocks declining

Inflation concerns significantly weighed on investor sentiment, fueled by elevated oil prices and rising global bond yields. An apparent impasse in Middle East peace talks further exacerbated these worries, impacting market stability.

Broader market weakness across several sectors, coupled with negative cues from other Asian markets, contributed to the overall decline. Heavyweight counter HDFC Bank also pulled the market lower, though selective buying in IT stocks provided some limited downside support.

RBI OFDI Commitments Surge

Separately, the Reserve Bank of India’s latest report indicated a substantial increase in India’s outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) commitments. These commitments jumped by 16.74% to $5,705.42 million in July 2026, up from $4,887.22 million in July 2025.

Asian Markets Mixed Amid Japan’s Data

Globally, Asian markets largely traded in negative territory, reflecting broader caution. This occurred despite Japan’s core machinery orders rising a seasonally adjusted 9.7 percent on month in June, reaching 1,055.8 billion yen and surpassing forecasts of a 7.2 percent increase.

Sitharaman Urges PSBs for Viksit Bharat

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman addressed Public Sector Banks (PSBs) and Financial Institutions, urging them to help shape, finance, and enable the vision of Viksit Bharat. She emphasized that PSBs have demonstrated their ability to transform, and the next phase should focus on converting this institutional strength into greater ambition, competitiveness, and leadership.

Sitharaman highlighted the competitive edge of PSBs, citing their vast customer base, extensive branch network, geographical presence, strong institutional experience, and growing digital capabilities. She also noted that each institution should identify and pursue its distinct opportunities.

As the trading session continued, the BSE Sensex reflected persistent bearish sentiment, with 22 of its 30 constituent stocks declining against only 8 advancing.
