Senior Citizen Benefits India: Financial Perks & Tax Savings
By ThePip Desk
Discover financial benefits for Indian seniors: higher interest rates, tax breaks, travel discounts, and more. Your guide to unlocking perks after 60.
When you reach 60 in India, you enter a new phase of life, often shifting away from active earning towards retirement savings. Thankfully, the Indian government offers various financial benefits specifically designed to help senior citizens manage their expenses.
These advantages include enhanced interest rates on your savings, specific tax concessions, and useful discounts on travel and utility services.
Boosting Your Savings
You can often benefit from higher interest rates on your savings, making your money work harder for you. Commercial banks and post offices typically add an extra 0.25 to 0.75 percentage point over standard fixed deposit rates for those aged 60 and above.
Additionally, the government-backed Senior Citizens’ Savings Scheme (SCSS) provides an appealing annual interest rate of 8.2%, with payouts distributed quarterly. An investment of ₹30 lakh in SCSS, for example, can generate an annual payout of ₹2.46 lakh for you.
Smart Tax Savings
Special tax benefits are also available, particularly if you opt for the old tax regime. Section 126 (formerly 80D) of the Income Tax Act allows senior citizens to claim a deduction of up to ₹50,000 for health insurance premiums.
This health insurance deduction includes a ₹5,000 sub-limit specifically for preventive health check-ups. Moreover, Section 80TTB permits a deduction of up to ₹50,000 on interest income you earn from savings, fixed, or recurring deposits.
While the old regime offers these targeted deductions, the new tax regime might also be beneficial for many senior citizens. Under this system, the Section 87A rebate can make income up to ₹12 lakh effectively tax-free, especially if your primary income sources are pension, salary, or interest.
Everyday Discounts You Can Use
Beyond investments and tax breaks, you can also access various discounts and concessions to ease your daily spending. Although Indian Railways stopped its senior-citizen fare concession in March 2020, other services still offer perks.
Several airlines, for instance, provide up to 10% off on base fares, and Maharashtra’s MSRTC offers a 50% fare discount for senior citizens. Super-seniors over 75 years old can even travel for free with MSRTC. Furthermore, telecom providers like BSNL and MTNL offer priority telephone registration and waivers on monthly charges, helping you save on communication costs.
