SEBI Chairman confirms the Closing Auction Session for F&O stocks is now permanent. Learn how this impacts market closing prices and trading hours.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) Chairman, Tuhin Kanta Pandey, confirmed that the new Closing Auction Session (CAS) for futures and options (F&O)-eligible stocks will remain a permanent fixture in the market. This announcement comes as the regulator actively analyzes feedback and concerns from various traders and market participants.

Understanding the Closing Auction Session Structure

Introduced on August 3, the CAS fundamentally alters how closing prices are determined for F&O stocks. It establishes a distinct auction phase after the conclusion of continuous trading.

  • Continuous trading for F&O stocks concludes at 3:15 p.m.
  • This is immediately followed by an auction process for these specific securities.
  • Conversely, non-F&O stocks continue their trading until 3:30 p.m.
  • Derivatives, a separate category, extend their trading window until 3:40 p.m.

Regulatory Review and Market Implications

SEBI is currently engaged in a comprehensive review of diverse inputs received regarding the CAS. This includes both quantitative data and qualitative feedback from market discussions.

  • Analysis of expiry-date data is underway to assess specific market behavior.
  • Social media discussions are being monitored to gauge broader market sentiment and concerns.

Chairman Pandey highlighted that despite ongoing analysis, no tracking error concerns have been identified by the regulator thus far. He also underscored the strategic importance of the CAS in its potential to attract foreign portfolio investment into India’s markets.

Separately, Pandey briefly addressed the evolving technological landscape, noting the critical need for organizations to understand and address existing gaps in quantum computing capabilities.

The permanence of the Closing Auction Session signals SEBI’s commitment to this structural change, even as it continues to refine its implementation based on comprehensive market analysis.
