By ThePip DeskIndia’s Labour Market Strengthens: Unemployment Drops to 5.1% in July

India’s labour market shows significant improvement in July 2026. LFPR rises to 55.4%, unemployment falls to 5.1%, and WPR increases to 52.5%, driven by rural growth.

India’s labour market showed a notable improvement in July 2026, with the overall Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) for individuals aged 15 and above increasing to 55.4%. This positive shift, detailed in the latest Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) monthly bulletin from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), also saw the unemployment rate decline to 5.1%.

The Worker Population Ratio (WPR) also rose to 52.5% in July, up from 51.4% in June. This indicates more individuals were employed relative to the total population, alongside the decrease in the unemployment rate from 5.5% in the previous month.

Rural Areas Drive Growth

This overall market improvement was largely propelled by rural India. The rural LFPR climbed to 58% in July from 56.6% in June, significantly contributing to the national figures.

In contrast, urban LFPR showed only a marginal increase, moving from 50.1% to 50.4% during the same period. Year-on-year data further underscores this rural-urban divergence, with rural LFPR rising from 56.9% in July 2025 to 58% in July 2026.

Rural unemployment saw a substantial decrease, falling from 5% to 4.5%. Urban unemployment remained relatively stable at 6.7%, while male unemployment generally declined across both rural and urban sectors.

Mixed Picture for Female Workers

Female labour force participation experienced one of the most significant shifts reported. The overall female LFPR increased by 1.7 percentage points, reaching 34.4% in July from 32.7% in June.

Rural female LFPR saw a rise from 36.6% to 38.8%, and urban female LFPR increased modestly from 24.8% to 25.3%. However, the urban female LFPR declined year-on-year, from 25.8% in July 2025 to 25.3% in July 2026.

Despite the overall positive trends, the employment landscape for urban women presented a less favorable outlook. Urban female unemployment increased to 8.8% in July, up from 8.4% in June.

This rate remained higher than the overall female unemployment rate, highlighting a specific challenge within urban female employment. The July estimates were compiled from data collected from 371,021 individuals using the Current Weekly Status (CWS) approach, updated in January 2025.
