Indian Stocks Fall Amid Geopolitical Fears & FII Outflows

By ThePip DeskIndian Stocks Fall Amid Geopolitical Fears & FII Outflows

Indian equity markets extend losses as geopolitical uncertainty and significant FII selling pressure the Sensex and Nifty. Crude oil prices also a concern.

Indian equity markets continued their downward trend on Tuesday, with the Sensex marking its third consecutive session of losses and the Nifty falling for the sixth straight day. This decline occurred amidst persistent geopolitical uncertainty and elevated crude oil prices.

Key Market Movements

  • The BSE Sensex closed at 77235.46, registering a decline of 492.70 points or 0.63%.
  • The Nifty also fell by over half a percent, concluding the session near its day’s low.
  • On the Sensex, 11 stocks advanced against 19 stocks that declined.

The market downturn was primarily influenced by the expiration of the US-Iran ceasefire without a new agreement, intensifying global tensions. This geopolitical instability contributed to elevated crude oil prices, further dampening investor sentiment.

Outflows and Caution

  • Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers, offloading equities worth Rs 2,535.10 crore on August 17, 2026.
  • Investors also remained cautious ahead of the weekly expiry of Nifty F&O contracts.

Domestic economic projections added to the cautious mood, with Ind-Ra forecasting India’s GDP growth to slow to 6.8% in FY27, a decrease from 7.6% in the previous year. Similarly, ICRA estimated India’s GDP growth at a four-quarter low of 7% for the April-June quarter of the current fiscal, attributing it to a slower services sector expansion.

Globally, European markets traded in the red, and most Asian markets closed lower, reflecting the broader impact of escalating US-Iran tensions. US President Donald Trump’s decision against extending the temporary ceasefire agreement with Iran intensified these concerns.

Sectoral Performance on BSE

  • Top Losing Indices: IT down 1.66%, TECK down 1.60%, Realty down 1.28%, Consumer Durables down 0.81%, FMCG down 0.67%.
  • Top Gaining Indices: Healthcare up 0.25%, Auto up 0.15%, Industrials up 0.08%, Energy up 0.03%.

Sensex Top Gainers

  • Axis Bank rose by 1.22%.
  • Power Grid Corporation gained 0.66%.
  • Mahindra & Mahindra advanced by 0.59%.

Despite the prevailing negativity, a report from the National Statistics Office (NSO) indicated a fall in India’s overall unemployment rate. The rate for persons aged 15 years and above declined to 5.1% in July 2026 from 5.5% in the preceding month, though this positive data point did not sway market sentiment.

With geopolitical headwinds persisting and significant FII activity, Indian markets concluded the day under considerable pressure. The immediate outlook remains tied to global developments and domestic economic indicators.
