By Market Desk
India’s equity mutual fund AUM surged to a record ₹48.5 lakh crore in July, dominating 56% of the industry AAUM, fueled by strong active scheme performance.
India’s equity mutual fund assets under management (AUM) reached a record ₹48.5 lakh crore in July, representing 56% of the entire mutual fund industry’s Average Assets Under Management (AAUM). This substantial growth was reported in the August edition of the NSE Market Pulse report.
Key Milestones in Equity AUM
- Equity AUM in July: ₹48.5 lakh crore
- Share of total industry AAUM: 56%
- Active equity schemes year-on-year growth: 13.3%
Active equity schemes were a primary driver of this expansion, now constituting nearly 78% of the total equity AUM. These schemes further account for 44% of the overall mutual fund industry’s AAUM, indicating sustained investor interest.
Top Equity Scheme Categories
- Flexi-cap funds: 15.6% of assets
- Thematic funds: 14.6% of assets
- Mid-cap funds: 13.6% of assets
- Small-cap funds: 11.5% of assets
- Combined share of these four categories: over 55% of total equity AUM
Investor confidence also manifested through consistent inflows via Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs). Monthly SIP contributions hit ₹31,961 crore in July, marking the fifth consecutive month above the ₹30,000 crore threshold.
SIP Inflows and Asset Growth
- Cumulative SIP contributions (first four months of FY27): ₹1.3 lakh crore
- Year-on-year cumulative SIP growth: 15.4%
- SIP assets in July: ₹18.2 lakh crore, crossing the ₹18 lakh crore mark for the first time
- SIP assets as percentage of mutual fund industry total: 21.1%
Passive funds also experienced significant expansion, with their AAUM climbing to ₹15.5 lakh crore, a 23.3% increase year-on-year. Equity passive funds were a major contributor, making up nearly 68% of these passive assets, alongside robust growth in gold and silver Exchange Traded Funds.
Passive and Debt Fund Performance
- Passive funds AAUM: ₹15.5 lakh crore
- Passive funds year-on-year growth: 23.3%
- Equity passive funds share of passive assets: nearly 68%
- Debt fund AAUM: ₹21.7 lakh crore
- Debt fund year-on-year decline: 0.4%
In contrast, the debt fund segment saw a slight contraction, with its AAUM falling by 0.4% year-on-year to ₹21.7 lakh crore. This decline was primarily attributed to a sharp decrease in passive debt funds, while active debt assets remained largely subdued.
The July data from the NSE report clearly indicates the continued strength and expansion of the equity-oriented segment within India’s mutual fund industry, even as debt assets recorded a comparatively subdued performance.
