Indian envoy meets Bangladesh FM to discuss economic cooperation amid rising diplomatic tensions and uncertainty over PM’s India visit.

Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi recently engaged with Bangladesh Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury to discuss ongoing economic cooperation and bilateral development projects. This crucial meeting took place during a period of heightened diplomatic strain between India and Bangladesh.

Understanding Bilateral Strains

The discussions unfolded amidst significant uncertainty surrounding Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s anticipated visit to India for the upcoming BRICS Summit. This visit is currently unlikely, as stated by Bangladesh Foreign Affairs Adviser Humaiun Kobir, unless a foundation of mutual trust is re-established between the nations.

A primary point of contention revolves around Dhaka’s persistent demand for the extradition of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina from India. Bangladesh has expressed strong resentment over her continued political activities and media appearances from Indian territory, leading to formal diplomatic protests.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has consistently maintained that it had no involvement in Hasina’s media events. Furthermore, India does not endorse any statements made concerning the Bangladesh government at such forums.

Key Developments in the Extradition Request

Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to death in absentia by a special tribunal in Bangladesh in November 2025. The charges against her stem from alleged “crimes against humanity” during a youth-led movement.

Bangladesh has actively sought her extradition from India following this conviction. New Delhi has confirmed that the extradition request is under examination, adhering strictly to applicable laws and established legal procedures.

Beyond Economic Talks

In addition to the financial discussions, High Commissioner Trivedi also conducted a courtesy call on Bangladesh’s Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain. Their conversation focused on fostering mutual benefits and cooperation in the healthcare sector, particularly concerning people-to-people initiatives.

Updates regarding these diplomatic engagements were shared publicly by the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh via its official account on X, formerly known as Twitter, ensuring transparency on the proceedings.
