By Market Desk
Foreign Portfolio Investors injected ₹16,621 crore into Indian equities (Aug 1-15), with strong inflows into financial services and consumer sectors, highlighting India’s consumption growth story.
Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) injected a substantial ₹16,621 crore into Indian equities between August 1 and 15, demonstrating a clear preference for specific sectors.
Consumption Story Drives Inflows
This significant capital influx largely gravitated towards financial services, automobiles, and other consumer-facing industries. The investment trend strongly signals a focus on India’s consumption narrative.
- Financial services led with ₹6,535 crore in inflows.
- Automobiles attracted ₹4,405 crore.
- Consumer services received ₹3,398 crore.
- Healthcare saw buying worth ₹2,910 crore.
- IT sectors garnered ₹2,530 crore.
Consumer Services notably recorded the highest inflow relative to its Assets Under Custody (AUC) at 1.23%. This marks the third consecutive period where consumer-oriented sectors led AUC-linked inflows, indicating sustained institutional interest.
Capital-Intensive Sectors See Outflows
Conversely, FPIs significantly divested from capital-intensive sectors, with telecom experiencing the largest outflow. This rotation suggests a selective approach by global investors.
- Telecom recorded the largest outflow at ₹3,322 crore.
- Capital Goods saw divestment of ₹1,556 crore.
- Power experienced outflows totaling ₹1,164 crore.
- Realty faced a reduction of ₹1,014 crore.
- Construction also saw outflows of ₹404 crore.
Telecom’s AUC-adjusted decline was the steepest, falling by 0.89%. Investors are prioritizing segments offering strong demand, clear earnings visibility, and liquidity over some traditional capital-intensive areas.
