The 8th Pay Commission has started stakeholder consultations in Delhi, focusing on potential salary and pension revisions for central government employees. Report due by mid-2027.

The 8th Pay Commission initiated crucial stakeholder consultations in New Delhi on August 7, focusing on prospective revisions to central government employee salaries and pensions. These meetings are set to conclude on August 10, marking a significant step in its mandate.

Understanding the Commission’s Mandate

Established on November 3, 2025, the three-member commission is chaired by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai. Its primary objective is to gather feedback and formulate recommendations for the upcoming pay and pension adjustments for central government personnel.

Discussions during these consultations are expected to cover several critical areas impacting central government employees and pensioners, including:

  • The fitment factor, a key component in salary calculation.
  • Comprehensive pay revision and pension changes.
  • Adjustments to allowances and retirement benefits.
  • Strategies for inflation compensation and enhancing employee welfare.

Nationwide Outreach Schedule

Beyond the ongoing Delhi meetings, the 8th Pay Commission has planned an extensive nationwide outreach program to engage with various employee associations. Future consultations are scheduled for:

  • Chennai on September 7-8.
  • Puducherry on September 9.
  • Chandigarh from September 16-18.
  • Jaipur between August 31 and September 1.

Current Pay Structure Under 7th Pay Commission

As the commission works towards new recommendations, it’s important to understand the existing pay framework governing central government employees and pensioners. These figures are currently set under the provisions of the 7th Pay Commission.

Key financial benchmarks for central government personnel include:

  • Minimum basic pay: Rs 18,000.
  • Minimum basic pension: Rs 9,000.
  • Maximum basic salary: Rs 2,25,000.
  • Apex positions, such as the Cabinet Secretary, earn Rs 2,50,000 per month.

The Union Cabinet approved the commission’s formation in January 2025, with its formal constitution in November 2025. With a significant portion of its 18-month mandate already utilized, the commission aims to submit its final report by May-June 2027.
