If you’re a central government employee, you’re likely keeping a close eye on the upcoming 8th Pay Commission, especially the fitment factor that could significantly change your basic salary.
This fitment factor acts as a multiplier, converting your current basic pay into a new one. While the 7th Pay Commission used a factor of 2.57, employee organizations are pushing for a much higher factor, ranging from 3.833 to 4.0.
Understanding Your Potential New Pay
Let’s walk through some estimated salary changes for employees across different levels, based on potential fitment factors between 2.00 and 2.57.
For a Level 5 employee, whose current basic salary is Rs 29,200, your new pay could fall between Rs 58,400 with a 2.00 factor and Rs 75,044 if a 2.57 factor is applied.
If you are a Level 6 employee, currently earning Rs 35,400, your basic salary might increase to anywhere from Rs 70,800 to Rs 90,978.
For those at Level 7, with a current basic salary of Rs 44,900, you could see your new estimated salary range from Rs 89,800 to Rs 1,15,393.
These pay levels include many roles you might be familiar with, such as senior clerks, technical staff, junior engineers, divisional accountants, section officers, inspectors, and senior supervisors.
What Happens Next?
It’s important to remember that these figures are just estimates. The 8th Pay Commission has not yet made its final decision on the fitment factor.
The Commission plans to hold meetings with various stakeholders, including employee and pensioner organizations, between August 31 and September. Their final report is expected to be submitted by May 2027, and the fitment factor will also play a big role in central government retirees’ pensions.
