India’s Defence Ministry Unveils 6th Indigenisation List
By Business Desk
India’s Ministry of Defence releases its 6th Indigenisation List of 405 items, boosting self-reliance and unlocking ₹3,070 crore business potential in defence manufacturing.
The Indian Ministry of Defence has officially announced its sixth Positive Indigenisation List, featuring 405 strategically important defence items. This initiative, part of the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ vision, aims to significantly reduce India’s dependency on foreign military equipment imports, with an estimated business potential of Rs 3,070 crore.
What the Sixth List Includes
The comprehensive list details a diverse array of defence components, including LINE replaceable units, sub-systems, sub-assemblies, spares, components, and raw materials. These items are crucial for various advanced platforms across the Indian armed forces and Coast Guard.
- 16 items are specifically designated for the Indian Coast Guard.
- 389 items are allocated for various Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs).
- Crucial for platforms like advanced light helicopters, Su-30MKI, T-72 and T-90 tanks, warships, and missile systems such as Konkurs-M.
- Also includes various defence electronics, including radars and sonars.
Driving Domestic Development
Several key organizations are pivotal in this indigenisation drive, each contributing significantly to the effort. Each item on the list is assigned an indicative timeline for indigenisation, ensuring a structured approach to domestic production.
- Bharat Electronics Ltd accounts for the largest share of items.
- Other involved entities include Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, Goa Shipyard Ltd, and Bharat Dynamics Ltd.
- Target completion dates for these items range from December 2026 to December 2032.
Upon successful indigenisation, these items will be exclusively procured from Indian industries, fostering a robust domestic defence ecosystem. DPSUs and the Indian Coast Guard will spearhead development through their ‘Make’ procedure and in-house routes, actively involving MSMEs.
Broader ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ Impact
This latest list is a continuation of the broader ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ campaign, significantly supported by the SRIJAN Defence Portal. Launched in August 2020, the portal has been instrumental in facilitating this nationwide indigenisation effort.
- As of June 2026, over 33,000 defence items have been offered for indigenisation by DPSUs and Service Headquarters.
- This includes 5,012 items from the previous five Positive Indigenisation Lists.
- More than 15,700 items have already been successfully indigenised, achieving an estimated import substitution value of approximately Rs 9,000 crore over the last five years.
- DPSUs have placed procurement orders worth around Rs 10,000 crore with domestic vendors up to March 2026.
The sustained efforts underscore significant progress in fostering a self-reliant defence ecosystem within India. This ongoing drive is crucial for enhancing national security capabilities while simultaneously boosting domestic industrial growth.
