India’s new LPG & PNG connection rules: 30-day termination, 90-day transition, and refill interval changes. Understand the policy shifts impacting households.
The Indian government has implemented new regulations for LPG and PNG connections, aiming to streamline household gas services and reduce dependency on LPG amidst geopolitical factors.
Driving Policy Shifts
The new regulations are influenced by broader objectives.
These include addressing the impact of the **US-Israel-Iran war**.
They also aim to reduce **LPG dependency** and curb **black marketing**.
A core goal is promoting ‘One Household, One Gas Connection’.
The 30-Day LPG Termination Rule
A key directive, the ’30-day rule,’ mandates that consumers terminate their existing LPG connection within **30 days** of obtaining a PNG connection.
For example, if a PNG connection is secured on June 23, 2026, the LPG connection must be removed by **July 23, 2026**.
Mandating PNG Transition within 90 Days
The ’90-day rule,’ announced on March 24th, requires LPG customers in areas with PNG infrastructure to switch within **three months** or face LPG connection suspension.
An amendment on May 25th provides relief, allowing consumers to obtain a transfer voucher for future LPG restoration if they move to a non-PNG area.
This flexibility particularly benefits **transferable employees**.
It also supports **migrant households** and **tenants**.
**Students** and families relocating to non-PNG areas also gain from this provision.
Reactivating Disconnected Gas Connections
Consumers can reactivate terminated Indane Gas, HP Gas, and Bharat Gas connections by visiting their distributor and submitting specific documents.
Required items include the **Original Transfer Voucher**.
An **Aadhaar Card** and address proof are also necessary.
The process concludes with filling out a transfer or reactivation form.
Updated LPG Refill Booking Intervals
New booking intervals for LPG refills have been implemented.
Urban areas now have a **25-day** interval.
Rural areas operate on a **45-day** interval, an increase from the previous **21-day** period.
The government has also observed a significant increase in online LPG cylinder bookings, reaching approximately **99%** across the industry since the West Asian conflict.
These comprehensive regulations underscore the government’s multi-faceted approach to managing India’s domestic energy landscape and ensuring equitable access.
