UPI Transactions Remain Free for Users & Small Businesses: PCI
By ThePip Desk
Payments Council of India confirms UPI transactions will stay free for users and small businesses. Learn about potential merchant charges and the future of digital payments in India.
The Payments Council of India (PCI) has confirmed that transactions via the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) will remain free for customers. This clarification directly addresses recent concerns regarding potential charges for the widely used digital payment method.
This assurance extends to small businesses, including local Kirana stores, which will not face any fees for accepting UPI payments. For larger businesses, any merchant service charges, if applied, would constitute commercial arrangements between the merchants and payment service providers, explicitly not passed on to consumers.
Understanding the Infrastructure Cost Debate
The discussion around merchant charges stems from the increasing operational costs associated with maintaining India’s extensive digital payments infrastructure. UPI has been a free service since its inception in 2016, becoming crucial for the nation’s digital economy.
- Technology development and upgrades
- Robust cybersecurity measures
- Proactive fraud prevention
- Essential customer support services
Currently, banks and payment service providers absorb these substantial costs. The escalating transaction volume across the UPI network necessitates finding sustainable financial models to ensure the system’s long-term viability.
Commitment to Security and Resilience
The PCI stressed the critical importance of continuous investment in the security, resilience, and fraud prevention mechanisms supporting UPI. This commitment is vital as the platform processes billions of transactions.
