UPI Dominates India’s Capital Markets: Rs 3.24 Lakh Cr Transactions
By ThePip Desk
UPI processed 23.1 crore transactions worth Rs 3.24 lakh crore in India’s capital markets (Oct ’25-Mar ’26), highlighting its crucial role in broking, IPOs, and mutual funds.
The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has cemented its role as a critical payment rail within India’s capital market infrastructure, recording significant transaction volumes and values. Between October 2025 and March 2026, validated UPI transactions across market intermediaries reached 23.1 crore, totaling Rs 3.24 lakh crore.
Key Transaction Metrics (Oct 2025 – Mar 2026)
- Total validated UPI transactions: 23.1 crore
- Total transaction value: Rs 3.24 lakh crore
- Broker transaction volume: 21.3 crore (92% of total)
- Broker transaction value: Rs 2.95 lakh crore
- IPO transaction volume: 1.07 crore
- IPO transaction value: Rs 20,458 crore
- Mutual Fund transaction volume: 70.36 lakh
- Mutual Fund transaction value: Rs 8,475 crore
- Demat accounts by March 2026: 22.5 crore
- Unique demat accounts by March 2026: 12.2 crore
Brokers dominated these figures, accounting for 92% of the total transaction volumes, processing over 21.3 crore transactions valued at Rs 2.95 lakh crore. This highlights UPI’s expansion beyond initial public offerings (IPOs) and mutual fund payments into broader investment services.
The surge aligns with India’s expanding retail investor base, which reached 22.5 crore demat accounts and 12.2 crore unique accounts by March 2026. The validated UPI framework, introduced in October 2025, aims to enhance security and transparency for both retail investors and market intermediaries.
Regulatory Standardisation and Adoption
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) implemented structural changes in FY26, including the validated framework and “SEBI Check,” to standardise the payment layer. Research analysts and investment advisers have also integrated UPI for fee collection.
Despite mutual funds representing a smaller percentage of overall person-to-merchant UPI transaction volumes at 0.6%, they contributed significantly to the transaction value, reaching 8%. This disparity indicates higher ticket sizes for investment payments within the mutual fund segment.
Future Capabilities and Market Impact
Banks and market intermediaries are actively developing UPI capabilities for Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs), lump-sum investments, and AutoPay mandates. They are also preparing for increased transaction volumes, especially during major IPOs.
This widespread adoption is expected to reduce funding friction and improve payment visibility for retail investors. The convergence of payments and investments via UPI is poised to further boost retail participation in India’s capital markets.
