Discover how SEBI’s Demat 2.0 tokenised bond pilot and NPCI’s new UPI features are transforming digital investments and financial markets.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has officially launched a framework for the tokenisation of corporate bonds. This pilot initiative, referred to as Demat 2.0, aims to improve market liquidity and expand access for a wider investor base.

How Tokenisation Transforms Bonds

By integrating blockchain technology, this framework simplifies the underlying infrastructure of debt securities. The specific goals for this transition include:

Enhanced liquidity by reducing barriers to entry for corporate debt.

Increased accessibility for diverse classes of investors.

Streamlined processes for both the issuance and trading of corporate bonds.

Expanding the UPI Ecosystem

In a parallel move to digitise financial services, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has announced major updates to the Unified Payments Interface. These additions are designed to simplify how users interact with both equity markets and daily payment workflows.

The latest enhancements introduced by the NPCI include:

UPI for Secondary Market, which is specifically built to facilitate easier investment processes within equity markets.

UPI Circle, a new feature allowing users to delegate payment authority to trusted individuals.

These combined efforts from the regulator and the payments body signal a shift toward a more integrated digital financial landscape in India. As these frameworks move from pilot to implementation, the focus remains on improving the overall user experience and transaction efficiency for participants across the financial sector.
