RBI Advances FCNR(B) Deposit Deadline to Aug 31
By ThePip Desk
RBI moves FCNR(B) deposit swap facility deadline to August 31, 2026. NRIs & OCIs, act fast to benefit from higher interest rates without INR risk.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has advanced the deadline for its special Foreign Currency Non-Resident (Bank) [FCNR(B)] deposit swap facility. The window, initially set to close on September 30, 2026, will now conclude on August 31, 2026, giving Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) less time to leverage its higher interest rates.
Key Facility Data
The central bank’s decision to shorten the window comes after a significant inflow of foreign exchange.
- Initial Introduction Date: June 8, 2026
- Forex Inflows by August 13: $52,300 million
Understanding the FCNR(B) Opportunity
Ankur Choudhary, CEO and Co-Founder of Belong, advises NRIs to align their decision with personal financial goals and investment horizons. The scheme specifically targets NRIs and Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs) looking for fixed income without Indian Rupee currency risk.
These deposits necessitate a 3-5 year lock-in period, although premature withdrawals are possible after one year. Such early access, however, may result in penalties, making them less suitable for those needing quick liquidity.
Key Benefits for Investors
FCNR(B) deposits offer several distinct advantages for eligible investors.
- Funds can be held in foreign currencies, such as the US Dollar, effectively mitigating exposure to INR fluctuations.
- Interest earned is generally exempt from Indian income tax, contingent on specific conditions.
- Both the principal amount and accrued interest are fully repatriable to the investor’s country of residence.
It is important to note that while Indian tax exemptions may apply, investors could still be liable for taxes in their country of residence.
Special vs. Regular FCNR(B) Deposits
The August 31 deadline applies exclusively to deposits that qualify for the special RBI swap facility. NRIs retain the option to open regular FCNR(B) deposits even after this date.
However, regular FCNR(B) deposits opened post-deadline will not benefit from the special swap facility. Consequently, their interest rates are anticipated to revert to pre-June levels or potentially lower than those offered under the special window.
Once an investor secures a rate under the special window, that specific rate remains constant until the deposit’s maturity. This stability holds regardless of any subsequent changes in the interest rates for regular FCNR(B) deposits.
Investor Suitability and Considerations
The special FCNR(B) window is not recommended for individuals requiring short-term liquidity or those whose future financial needs are predominantly in Indian Rupees. Indian residents are explicitly ineligible to invest in FCNR(B) deposits.
For UAE-based NRIs, USD-linked savings might be relevant due to the Dirham’s peg to the dollar. However, those intending to use their funds within India should carefully evaluate their future INR requirements before committing.
