Indian Bank secures $400M via External Commercial Borrowings, leveraging RBI’s swap window for expansion. Plans for further fundraising to reach $1B.
Indian Bank is set to raise $400 million through External Commercial Borrowings (ECB) this week. This strategic move leverages the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) concessional swap window to support the bank’s business growth.
MD and CEO Binod Kumar confirmed that this overseas fundraising will occur at a highly competitive rate. The public sector lender aims for a larger target beyond this initial sum.
Ambitious Funding Targets
- Raise an additional $600 million via ECB before December 31, 2026.
- Overall target of $1 billion from ECB.
- Approximately $2 billion expected through Foreign Currency Non-Resident (Bank) or FCNR(B) deposits.
Indian Bank has already successfully mobilized $1.5 billion from FCNR(B) deposits. This strong performance reflects significant demand from Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), who are attracted by the product’s returns.
RBI’s Concessional Swap Facility Explained
The Reserve Bank of India had previously introduced a special dollar-rupee forex swap facility. This facility was designed to encourage foreign currency inflows into the country.
- The swap facility for FCNR(B) deposits was prematurely closed due to an encouraging response and strong forex inflows.
- Initially, this facility was scheduled to remain open until September 30, 2026, for FCNR(B) deposits.
- The RBI had introduced the special swap facility on June 8.
- Different deadlines were set: September 30 for FCNR(B) deposits and December 31 for ECBs and Overseas Foreign Currency Borrowings (OFCBs).
The impact of the RBI’s initiative on foreign currency inflows was substantial, as evidenced by figures up to mid-August.
Key Inflow Figures (August 13)
- FCNR(B) deposits attracted $52.3 billion from overseas customers.
- Overseas Foreign Currency Borrowings (OFCBs) contributed $2.81 billion.
- External Commercial Borrowings (ECBs) added $1.74 billion.
Beyond its fundraising efforts, Indian Bank recently celebrated its 120th Foundation Day on August 15. During the event, MD and CEO Binod Kumar virtually inaugurated 15 new branches across India.
The bank also launched several new customer-centric digital products. These initiatives included a cybersecurity mascot, ‘IB CYBER CAPTAIN’, aimed at enhancing awareness, and new voice banking services in three languages.
Executive Directors Ashutosh Choudhury, Shiv Bajrang Singh, and Mini T M attended the celebrations. The bank reaffirmed its commitment to financial inclusion and contributing to India’s ‘Viksit Bharat’ vision.
