India’s Green Channel: Faster UK & EU Investments
By Business Desk
India launches ‘Green Channel’ to fast-track European and UK investments with simplified government approvals, boosting capital inflow.
India is preparing to establish a dedicated ‘green channel’ aimed at significantly streamlining and accelerating investments from companies based in Europe and the United Kingdom. This strategic initiative seeks to provide specialized support and simplify the often-complex process of navigating government approvals for these international investors.
The primary objective is to move beyond conventional trade agreements, fostering a more substantial influx of capital into the Indian economy. Senior government officials will directly oversee this mechanism, ensuring the prompt resolution of any potential issues that may arise during the investment process.
Streamlining Investment Pathways
This development comes partly in response to a specific request from the UK, which sought a nodal agency and a single-window system for its investors. The United Kingdom currently stands as India’s sixth-largest inward investor, demonstrating a significant economic relationship.
Cumulative equity investments from the UK reached $35 billion by September 2024, highlighting the existing capital flow. The new channel is poised to further enhance this robust financial partnership.
Context of Expanding Economic Ties
The establishment of this ‘green channel’ also aligns with recent liberalizations within India’s financial sectors. These include the allowance of 100% Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the insurance sector and increased investment limits within the banking sector.
Momentum for this initiative has grown following the implementation of the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). Furthermore, the anticipation of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement plays a role in fostering an environment conducive to increased foreign investment.
This move underscores India’s proactive stance in attracting international capital, signaling a clear commitment to ease of doing business for key global partners.
