India Infrastructure Finance Company Ltd (IIFCL) secures $200M, initiating its $1.8B External Commercial Borrowing program aimed at boosting India’s infrastructure development with MIGA guarantees.

State-owned India Infrastructure Finance Company Ltd (IIFCL) has commenced its substantial $1.8 billion External Commercial Borrowing (ECB) fundraising program.

The company successfully mobilised an initial $200 million from international markets, marking a crucial first step in its government-approved strategy to secure global funds.

Dissecting the Funding Framework

This comprehensive fundraising initiative aims to diversify IIFCL’s capital sources and tap into long-term global pools, reinforcing its commitment to India’s infrastructure development.

A significant portion, approximately $1 billion, is targeted through long-term ECBs, structured with tenors extending up to 15 years under the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) Guarantee Facility.

MIGA, a vital arm of the World Bank Group, provides essential protection against non-commercial risks. This mechanism is designed to incentivise and safeguard foreign investment within developing nations.

Strategic Objectives and Project Support

The long-term nature of this funding is specifically tailored to support infrastructure projects, which inherently possess extended gestation periods.

This approach directly enhances IIFCL’s capacity to deliver sustained financing to India’s critical infrastructure sector.

Rohit Rishi, IIFCL Managing Director, stated that the government-approved, structured fundraising program would be executed within the stipulated timeframe to address the country’s infrastructure financing requirements.

IIFCL maintains a strong track record, having previously secured over $3.5 billion from international markets for various infrastructure development initiatives across India.
