IIFCL Secures $1.8B for India Infrastructure via ECB Program
By Business Desk
IIFCL launches $1.8B ECB program, raising $200M initially to fund India’s critical infrastructure projects with long-term capital.
India Infrastructure Finance Company Ltd (IIFCL) has initiated a $1.8 billion External Commercial Borrowing (ECB) program, successfully mobilizing an initial $200 million from international markets. This strategic move aims to secure long-term capital for crucial infrastructure projects across India.
This initial mobilization marks the first phase of IIFCL’s extensive international fundraising efforts, which received government approval to secure approximately $1.8 billion through ECBs. The company is actively engaging global financial markets, prioritizing competitive pricing, effective risk management, and the acquisition of long-term resources.
Understanding IIFCL’s Funding Strategy
The program outlines several key financial figures:
The total approved ECB program is set at $1.8 billion.
An initial amount of $200 million has already been mobilized.
Approximately $1 billion is targeted through long-term ECBs under the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) Guarantee Facility.
These MIGA-backed ECBs will feature maturity periods extending up to 15 years.
IIFCL has a track record of previously raising over $3.5 billion from international markets for infrastructure development.
A significant part of this program involves raising about $1 billion through long-term ECBs, featuring maturities extending up to 15 years, under the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) Guarantee Facility. MIGA, an entity of the World Bank Group, provides guarantees against non-commercial risks. These guarantees are crucial for encouraging foreign investment in developing nations like India.
This long-term funding is specifically designed to support infrastructure projects, which often have extended gestation periods. By securing such capital, IIFCL enhances its capacity to provide sustained financing to the sector. This initiative represents a strategic diversification of IIFCL’s funding sources, tapping into international pools of long-term capital.
IIFCL Managing Director Rohit Rishi confirmed that with government approval for the $1.8 billion ECB mobilization, including long-term ECBs under the MIGA Guarantee Facility, a structured fundraising program is now firmly in place. He reiterated the company’s dedication to executing the program within its set timeframe and supporting the country’s infrastructure financing requirements.
The launch of this new $1.8 billion ECB program builds upon IIFCL’s extensive experience. It further strengthens the company’s ability to channel long-term global capital towards projects vital for India’s continued growth and development.
