The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has uncovered a significant “Fake government department” scam in Gujarat, involving the siphoning of over Rs 22 crore. This elaborate scheme saw individuals establishing fictitious offices to fraudulently secure government grants.
How the Fraudulent Scheme Operated
Accused individuals orchestrated the fraud by setting up six fake irrigation and water resources department offices within Gujarat’s Dahod district. They impersonated genuine officials and forged numerous documents to facilitate their illicit activities.
The core components of the scam included:
- Establishing six fake irrigation and water resources department offices.
- Securing government grants for 121 fictitious projects.
- Siphoning off funds totaling over Rs 22 crore.
Laundering the Proceeds of Crime
The siphoned funds were subsequently laundered through a complex network designed to obscure their illegal origin. This process involved channeling the money through various bank accounts.
The laundered funds were then strategically invested into several asset classes:
- Properties
- Shares
- Mutual funds
ED’s Enforcement Action
In response to the investigation, the Enforcement Directorate has taken decisive action. Assets linked to the main accused, Abubakar Jakirali Saiyad, and his associates have been officially attached.
