Godrej Industries Group enters India’s $12 billion private credit market with a ₹2,000 crore alternative investment fund, targeting mid-market companies.

Godrej Industries Group has made a significant move into India’s growing private credit market, launching a Category-II Alternative Investment Fund (AIF). This new fund aims to secure a substantial corpus of ₹2,000 crore, signaling the conglomerate’s strategic expansion.

Key Fund Details

  • Target Corpus: ₹2,000 crore (including a ₹1,000 crore base and a ₹1,000 crore greenshoe option)
  • Market Entry: India’s $12 billion private credit market
  • Target Investors: High Net Worth Individuals (HNIs), Ultra High Net Worth Individuals (UHNIs), family offices, and institutional investors

The fund’s investment strategy is notably sector-agnostic, targeting well-performing private mid-market companies. These businesses must demonstrate strong operational performance and consistent cash flows to qualify for financing. All financing will be securely backed by tangible collateral and feature comprehensive covenant protections.

Manish Shah, Non-Executive Director of Godrej AMC and MD & CEO of Godrej Capital, explained this venture as a “logical progression” for the Asset Management Company. He highlighted the demand from successful mid-sized businesses for flexible capital solutions that avoid equity dilution.

Addressing Mid-Market Needs

  • Growth financing
  • Acquisitions
  • Refinancing existing debt
  • Working capital requirements

India’s private credit market is currently experiencing a rapid surge in activity, attracting several new entrants. This segment presents an appealing landscape for lenders due to its typically higher returns.

Market Return Dynamics

  • Typical Returns: Ranging from 14% to 22%, depending on the deal structure
  • Comparative Advantage: These returns significantly surpass those observed in the US and European markets

The competitive landscape is intensifying with new players like Nuvama, PAG, ASK Alternates, and Lighthouse Canton recently launching their own private credit funds. Godrej’s entry solidifies the trend of increasing institutional interest in this lucrative segment.

Godrej Industries Group’s strategic foray reflects a broader industry recognition of India’s mid-market capital needs and the potential for robust returns in private credit. This move positions Godrej to capitalize on a dynamic market offering flexible capital solutions without requiring equity dilution. The increasing competition from various new funds underscores the sector’s growth trajectory and its appeal to diverse investor profiles.
