Apple to Produce iPads, Macs in India: Minister

By Business DeskApple to Produce iPads, Macs in India: Minister

Apple plans to expand iPad and Mac production in India, supported by a new ₹62,500 crore government scheme aimed at boosting local manufacturing and global supply chain integration.

India’s Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that Apple is anticipated to broaden its manufacturing footprint in the country, adding iPads and Mac computers to its existing iPhone production. This strategic expansion is bolstered by a significant new government initiative.

The expansion comes alongside the launch of the Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme (MPMS), a government program allocated ₹62,500 crore. This scheme, active from the 2026-27 financial year through 2030-31, aims to bolster India’s position in global electronics.

  • Boosting local value addition in manufacturing.
  • Fostering the growth of domestic smartphone brands.
  • Integrating India more deeply into global supply chains.

Apple has steadily increased its manufacturing operations in India since 2017, partnering with entities such as Foxconn and Tata Electronics for iPhone assembly. This diversification strategy aims to reduce reliance on its traditional manufacturing hubs.

  • India is projected to contribute approximately 26% of global iPhone production by the end of 2026.
  • Other major companies, including Google, are also expected to relocate significant portions of their export-oriented device manufacturing from China to India.

Navigating Production Complexities

Expanding production to more intricate devices like iPads and Macs presents considerable operational hurdles. This process demands substantial capital investment and several years to cultivate a robust local ecosystem of component suppliers.

  • Global supply chain disruptions, particularly shortages of semiconductor memory chips (DRAM and NAND flash).
  • Increased production costs directly impacting hardware prices.

These global constraints have already led Apple to raise prices for several Mac and iPad and Mac models in India as of June 2026. While Apple’s customer base typically exhibits less price sensitivity, sustained hardware price increases could eventually influence demand.

Investors and market observers will closely monitor the new manufacturing scheme’s progress and Apple’s capacity to scale non-iPhone device production. Long-term success hinges on the local ecosystem’s ability to support high-precision manufacturing amidst ongoing global cost pressures.
