By Business DeskAmazon India Leverages Dedicated Freight Corridor for E-commerce Logistics

Amazon India pioneers the use of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor for e-commerce logistics, enhancing speed, reliability, and sustainability in its supply chain.

Amazon India has made a significant strategic move, becoming the inaugural e-commerce company to operate on the Joint Parcel Product-Rapid Cargo Service (JPP-RCS) train on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC). This expansion, a collaboration with Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Ltd, marks a pivotal shift in the company’s logistics strategy.

Operational Growth and Scale

Amazon India’s engagement with the railway network demonstrates substantial growth since its inception.

  • In 2019, Amazon initiated its rail operations with a single train.
  • The network has since expanded to over 140 trains.
  • These trains operate across 130 intercity routes.
  • The service now connects more than 100 destination cities.

The new daily rail movement will deploy over 10 Van Parcels (VPs), critically linking Amazon’s northern and western operational hubs. This strategic shift from conventional surface transportation to rail aims to bolster the company’s multimodal capabilities.

The WDFC, stretching approximately 1,504 kilometers from New Dadri in Uttar Pradesh to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal (JNPT) near Mumbai, offers crucial connectivity to key regions.

Efficiency and Sustainability Gains

This initiative is designed to deliver more reliable and sustainable transportation of shipments, especially as the crucial festive season approaches. Kishore Lanka, Director-Operations at Amazon India, highlighted the move’s intent to leverage rail as an “economical, reliable, and sustainable mode of transportation.”

The broader vision for Dedicated Freight Corridors, as articulated by Manoj Singh, Member (Operations and Business Development), Railway Board, is to alleviate existing rail network congestion and increase freight train speeds. Singh noted the JPP-RCS service can move 350-400 tonnes within 24 hours, providing “greener, faster, and more reliable transportation.”

Future Collaboration and Market Impact

Lanka expressed anticipation for “deeper collaboration with Indian Railways and DFCCIL” to enhance logistics and meet evolving customer needs. This expansion underscores rail’s growing role within Amazon’s multimodal network across northern and western India.

The DFCs are poised to reduce overall logistics costs by connecting ports and industrial areas for faster freight movement. This strategic infrastructure utilization by Amazon India sets a precedent for other e-commerce players, signaling a long-term shift towards more integrated and efficient supply chain solutions across the nation.
