Adani: New Rating Frameworks Needed for Futuristic Infrastructure

By Business DeskAdani: New Rating Frameworks Needed for Futuristic Infrastructure

Gautam Adani calls for updated rating frameworks to capture the multi-layer value of futuristic infrastructure, emphasizing the convergence of energy, data, and manufacturing.

Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani has urged rating firms to update their assessment frameworks. He stated that current models fail to capture the complex, multi-layer value inherent in futuristic infrastructure ecosystems.

Speaking at a CareEdge Ratings event in Mumbai, Adani highlighted that the true value in today’s economic landscape is generated at the convergence of ‘energy + data + manufacturing’. He stressed that India’s significant infrastructure growth mandates ‘wider lenses’ for risk assessment, not a compromise on standards or independence.

The Shortcomings of Traditional Valuation

Adani explained that traditional assessments, which focus on individual assets, miss the compounding economic effects of transformational projects. These projects go beyond mere asset metrics, creating new demand and entire ecosystems.

He emphasized that the current linear financial models struggle to quantify the full impact of these interconnected developments.

Illustrative Projects: Mundra, Vizhinjam, and Khavda

To underscore his point, Adani cited key projects from his group, including Mundra, Vizhinjam, and Khavda. Mundra, initially a marshy coastline with no industrial base, developed into a dynamic platform.

At Mundra, each new layer of development cross-subsidizes and de-risks others, creating an economic compounding flywheel. This intricate interplay of components is often overlooked by conventional financial evaluations.

Vizhinjam, despite its strategic geographical advantages, faced difficulties passing standard financial tests. This was primarily due to its significant engineering complexity and the immense capital risk involved.

The Khavda project, situated in an isolated desert, is envisioned as a foundational platform where several critical elements converge:

  • Energy infrastructure
  • Artificial intelligence capabilities
  • Manufacturing facilities
  • Digital infrastructure
  • Industrial capability

Adani argued that measuring Khavda solely as a power project would lead to its undervaluation for decades. Its true significance lies in its role as a transformational platform for India’s burgeoning AI manufacturing ecosystem.

A New Analytical Framework is Essential

These platform infrastructure assets are unique because they do not just satisfy existing demand but actively create new demand, ecosystems, and capabilities. Consequently, a more comprehensive analytical framework is required.

This framework must be capable of measuring beyond standalone cash flows, incorporating:

  • Ecosystem multipliers
  • Strategic resilience
  • Adjacency value

Such an evolved approach is crucial for accurately assessing the long-term impact and true worth of India’s futuristic infrastructure developments.
