DPIIT Receives 13 Applications for White Goods PLI Scheme

Summary

DPIIT receives 13 applications committing ₹1,914 crore under the PLI scheme for white goods, including air conditioner components. Boosting domestic manufacturing and investment in India.

The air in the DPIIT office, I imagine, probably still smells faintly of fresh paperwork — or maybe that’s just the memory of it. Either way, things have been busy. And, as per reports, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has received a flurry of applications under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for white goods.

Thirteen applications, to be exact. That’s what the official statements are saying. And the commitment? A cool ₹1,914 crore. That’s a lot of money tied up in, you know, things like air conditioner components, among other white goods.

One existing beneficiary of the PLI scheme is committing an additional investment of ₹15 crore, the details show, which is interesting. Nine other applicants have applied for manufacturing air conditioner components, with a cumulative investment of ₹1,816 crore. The scale is pretty significant. And it is all, in theory, geared towards boosting domestic manufacturing, of course.

The tricky part is always the follow-through, right? The actual implementation. But, the fact that there’s this level of interest, and this much money being put on the table — it’s a positive sign, you’d have to say. At least that’s the general consensus, as far as I can gather.

I’m told the applications came in over a recent period — the specifics are still trickling out. But the goal, as I understand it, is to incentivize companies to invest in domestic production. And, if the numbers are anything to go by, it seems to be working. Or, at least, it’s off to a start.

The ripple effects, of course, are what everyone will be watching. More jobs, more local manufacturing — all the things that come with this kind of investment. It’s too early to say for sure. But the initial numbers, at least, are promising. Promising, indeed.
