Karnataka Establishes Quantum Task Force
The Government of Karnataka has officially constituted a 16-member ‘Quantum Task Force,’ with the strategic aim of positioning the state as a leading national hub for quantum technology and innovation. This significant development was announced by officials on Monday, underscoring Karnataka’s commitment to advancing cutting-edge scientific fields.
The formation of this high-level task force follows a recent government order issued by the Department of Electronics, Information Technology, Biotechnology, and Science and Technology. The directive outlines the state’s proactive approach to fostering technological leadership.
Implementing the Quantum Roadmap
The primary mandate of the newly formed task force is to meticulously implement the outlines and strategic directives of the ‘Karnataka Quantum Roadmap.’ This comprehensive roadmap was initially unveiled during the Quantum India Bengaluru Summit, setting a clear vision for the state’s quantum future.
Leading this prestigious initiative is Prof Arindam Ghosh, who has been appointed as the Chairman of the task force. Prof Ghosh holds the distinguished position of JRD Tata Chair Professor and J C Bose National Fellow at the Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Science (IISc).
The role of Member Secretary will be jointly served by the Director of the Department of Science and Technology (Government of Karnataka) and the Managing Director of KSTEPS (Karnataka Science and Technology Promotion Society), ensuring strong governmental and institutional coordination.
The 16-member committee comprises a diverse group of prominent experts. These include representatives from leading academic institutions, specialized research centres, the burgeoning tech industry, and seasoned senior government officials, bringing a wide array of expertise to the table.
Strategic Direction and Infrastructure Development
This high-level task force is charged with providing critical policy formulation, strategic direction, and institutional guidance. Its efforts will be concentrated on stimulating quantum technology research, fostering innovation, supporting startup ecosystems, and promoting industrial adoption within the state.
A key responsibility of the committee will be the blueprinting and oversight of the development of essential cutting-edge infrastructure. This includes the ambitious mega ‘Quantum City in Hesserghatta,’ which is envisioned as a foundational project.
The ‘Quantum City’ project is poised to become the epicentre of India’s quantum ecosystem, symbolizing Karnataka’s aspiration to lead the nation in this transformative technological domain. Its development signifies a major step towards realizing the state’s quantum ambitions.
