Ewing Hall Lahore: Restoration Confirmed, Demolition Averted
By Varun Mittal
Historic Ewing Hall in Lahore will be restored, not demolished, LHAR confirms. This decision follows a legal battle over unpaid dues, ensuring heritage preservation.
Historic Ewing Hall Saved from Demolition
Lahore’s historic Ewing Hall will undergo restoration and preservation efforts instead of being demolished, the Lahore Heritage Areas Revival Board (LHAR) confirmed. This decision ends recent public speculation regarding the fate of the century-old building, emphasizing a commitment to heritage conservation.
Key Developments in the Legal Process
The preservation plan follows a prolonged legal and administrative process initiated by significant outstanding rental dues.
- Ewing Hall, originally leased in 1915 for student accommodation, has been unused for its intended purposes since 2015.
- Over Rs. 10 crore (approximately Rs. 107 million) in rental dues accumulated, despite numerous reminders and formal notices.
- The Board of Revenue, Punjab, issued a show-cause notice in March 2026.
- Following a series of hearings, the land was officially resumed by the provincial government on April 27, 2026.
Commitment to Heritage Conservation
LHAR clarified that this decision was the culmination of a multi-year legal process, not an abrupt action. The board, in collaboration with the Walled City of Lahore Authority, prioritizes the preservation and restoration of historic structures.
The organization also stated that the matter is purely administrative and legal, not directed against any specific community or institution. LHAR expressed respect for Forman Christian College and remains open to dialogue with all stakeholders.
What’s Next for Ewing Hall
The restoration efforts will ensure Ewing Hall, considered a vital part of Lahore’s architectural heritage, is maintained and rehabilitated. This move underscores the government’s commitment to protecting cultural landmarks.
