India Meteorological Department forecasts widespread rainfall & thunderstorms across Delhi and vast regions this week due to strengthening monsoon. Regional variations expected.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast predicting widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning across Delhi and significant parts of the country throughout the upcoming week. This meteorological pattern is attributed to the strengthening southwest monsoon, which is expected to become particularly active over northwest India, bringing isolated heavy showers to the national capital.

For Delhi specifically, conditions on Sunday are anticipated to include scattered rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong surface winds. Temperatures are projected to range between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius for the maximum, with a minimum of 31 degrees Celsius. The general atmospheric state will feature cloudy skies and intermittent rain spells over several days, indicating a consistent, albeit varied, precipitation regime.

Beyond Delhi, the active southwest monsoon is set to influence a broad geographical expanse. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast for northern states including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. Certain isolated areas within these regions could even experience extremely heavy rainfall, elevating the risk of flash floods and landslides due to the intensity of precipitation.

Moving eastward and centrally, widespread rainfall is also anticipated across Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Vidarbha. Eastern India, encompassing West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, Odisha, and Jharkhand, is expected to receive heavy to very heavy showers, with West Bengal and Sikkim facing a potential for isolated extremely heavy rainfall. The Northeast states, from Arunachal Pradesh to Tripura, will similarly experience widespread heavy rain. Further west, Konkan and Goa are slated for widespread rainfall, while Gujarat and other parts of Maharashtra will observe scattered showers. Southern India, including Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, is under an active monsoon spell characterized by widespread rainfall and thunderstorms.

Despite this pervasive monsoon activity, a notable regional divergence exists: isolated heatwave conditions are still expected to persist over eastern Uttar Pradesh for the next two days. This highlights the complex, geographically differentiated nature of India’s monsoon system, where active weather fronts can coexist with persistent thermal anomalies in adjacent regions.
