Midjourney, the AI image generation firm, is diving into medical hardware with ‘Midjourney Medical,’ unveiling an ultrasonic full-body scanner. This device promises detailed scans in just 60 seconds, positioning itself as a significantly faster and radiation-free alternative to traditional MRI scans.

How the Scanner Works

• The Midjourney Scanner immerses an individual in water.
• A system of half a million underwater sensors uses echolocation, like dolphins, to transmit ultrasonic waves.
• These sensors capture vertical slices to generate terabytes of data per second.
• It constructs a detailed 3D map of muscles, fat, bones, and organs.
• Midjourney asserts the image quality is comparable to MRI.
• Developed with ultrasound technology firm Butterfly Network, each system includes 40 Butterfly Ultrasound-on-Chip imaging modules.

Ambitious Rollout Plans

Midjourney CEO David Holz envisions body scanning becoming as routine as a spa visit. The company has laid out ambitious expansion plans:

• The first ‘Midjourney Spa,’ housing 10 scanners and wellness amenities, is scheduled to open in San Francisco by late 2027.
• The company aims to deploy 50,000 scanners globally within the next six years.
• A target of performing one billion full-body scans monthly is set.

Regulatory and Initial Focus

While diagnostic medical applications will necessitate US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearances, Midjourney is initially focusing on detailed body composition maps. These applications do not require the same level of regulatory approval, allowing for a quicker market entry.
