Tamil Nadu partners with IN-SPACe to establish a Common Technical Facility in Thoothukudi, boosting private space systems manufacturing and testing in India.
Tamil Nadu to Host New Space Manufacturing Hub
Tamil Nadu has inked a deal with the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) to establish a Common Technical Facility (CTF) for space systems manufacturing in Thoothukudi. This strategic move aims to significantly scale up private sector participation and innovation in India’s burgeoning space industry.
The agreement was signed at IN-SPACe’s annual industry conclave in Ahmedabad. The CTF will be located at Allikulam, near the proposed Kulasekarapattinam spaceport.
- IN-SPACe will provide equipment worth up to ₹100 crore.
- The Tamil Nadu government will supply land and fund necessary infrastructure.
- The facility is expected to foster a larger industrial cluster around the upcoming spaceport.
Accelerating Private Sector Space Innovation
The CTF is designed to offer shared-access testing capabilities for private companies and startups involved in building space-grade hardware. This includes essential systems for vibration, shock, thermal vacuum, electromagnetic compatibility, pressure, and flow simulation.
Officials believe this infrastructure will significantly reduce the time and capital required to qualify components for space applications. This addresses a major hurdle for private players, despite recent policy reforms.
Strategic Impact & Future Outlook
This integrated launch and manufacturing ecosystem is anticipated to attract substantial private investment. It is also expected to create high-skilled employment opportunities within the state.
The initiative aligns with India’s broader strategy to enhance private sector involvement in space. It aims to develop globally competitive manufacturing capabilities for space technologies.
The agreement was signed by D Karthikeyan, Chairman and Managing Director of the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation, and Anupam Anand, Joint Secretary at IN-SPACe. Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay commended the state officials involved in this initiative.
